One option, for a really big house, is to allocate enough space in a large closet, for a washer/dryer in there…using only 10% of space.

The tricky part is locating the dryer near an exterior wall, for vent clean out.

LAUNDRY is something you do every day. EVERY DAY.

If you have a family, it is something you do constantly…. always in the background of all the other chores.

So here is the spectrum of Laundry “rooms”

  1. A closet with a stackable.
  2. A self-contained true room, 10 x 10 on a corner of the house, with nice windows bringing in fresh air, and light on two sides, a folding table/island, a place to hang clothes, a place for laundry baskets, trash, cleaning supplies.
  3. An ironing table, and while you are at it, toss in a chair and a TV, for when you get tired, and need to sit down a minute…and put down your coffee and wait and read for a minute… this IS a huge work effort, not an in-between job.
  4. If you have a pet, it might have a dog washing station here, with stacks of towels waiting.

Since it is such a utility room space, it would probably be near a back entrance to the house, where boots and shoes are removed and coats hung up in a mud room…(boots that need their soles cleaned off in the laundry tub…) that opens to a huge wide door so you could hang some of your laundry on the line in the sun…a gentle, gracious way of living.

There will be a huge soaking tub, large enough to wash a huge cat pan, or soak a sleeping bag, or down comforter etc.”

By having such a room…you will not “pollute” the rest of the house with laundry on your bed to fold, ironing board in the living room, laundry baskets all over, and washing the dog, only in the summertime, outdoors.

See? The house just works better, in more harmony… and it doesn’t fight your efforts to have a tranquil living room or bedroom.  Plus the noise of the washer/dryer, the buzzers is moved off to the side of the house…Plus… it being nearer an exterior wall, makes cleaning out the dryer vent easier.

It is OK to dream like this… most people think of laundry as an afterthought… but.. like a kitchen or bathroom that you use EVERY DAY.. a laundry room should be bumped up the priority list.

These things of themselves do not cost more…but such a design adds so much to the people living in this house the next 50 years… !!!

And for builders… don’t you think such a laundry room will sell houses? ! come on…THINK!

A lady checks the bathrooms and kitchen…but if you want  some real bonus points… toss in a great laundry room.. have it staged, with that chair, the coffee cup, books and magazine and a big screen TV for “her shows” and this house will SELL!!!  just keeping it real here… real nice.

This room will haunt each potential buyer..a dream laundry room… a place of joy and dignity… not a drudgery to add despair to the daily chores…  a man has his garage… give the little lady a laundry room!
