Halls are fun.

But they can also be depressing, boring , and claustrophobic.

Think of a cheap Holiday Inn…. A long, dark, endlessly long narrow hall like in a Holiday Inn is depressing,

What is a fun hall?

One that is wide, with a grand focal view is, uplifting, drawing you in like a magnet,  inviting magnet, magnetically pulls you thru in an anticipatory moment.

Such a hall, with a view AFFECTS you.

If you have a focal view, at the end of a wide passage..

I have a love hate relation with halls.

A hall can have bend in it, like the curve of a street, that pulls you thru with curiosity….this would have to be quiet the long house… I guess you could incorporate the bending hall  idea to an outdoor garden path, or arbor.

The key words are wide, short hall.

Famous LONG halls are

MIT

The Cloisters on Sea Island.

They are just functionally important, , a mindless path from here to there…. to accommodate the building size.

At 12-15 feet wide, and the view from end to end, is not depressing, or claustrophobic, it is more like walking down a city street.

MY EXPERIENCE

My house is 45×60 rectangle on a ¼ acre city lot

It started out as a 30 x 45 house.

My house is mostly adjacent rooms, eliminating square feet for a hall.

I lined up doors from front to back, so the walk is a perfect straight line…but not a hall.  The walking space is taken from the foot of the bed, a closet, the path in front of 2 sinks of a J&J bathroom.

I had to force my architect to methodically move doors a few inches each way, to perfectly align 8 doors in a row.  In the end was not perfect (compromise… ) but it was not carelessly done, with zigzag path, that could have been straight.

With this path, I could have a 60 foot runner from front to back of house, accentuating the length…
